Project Description:
Introducting, Crochet-o-vision!!
Through the magical art of crochet I will create a window into the former
textile mill's inner reaches! In every historical building there are spaces
that the general public cannot see, even though they might want to because
these spaces are "neat" or "interesting." There seems
to be a longing to be witness to an authentic space or time through these
places. I would like to offer these visitors a chance to see a crocheted
replica of one of these spaces! With help from the museum staff I will
select an off limits area of the museum about 20" x 20" x .2"
in size and recreate it life size out of crocheted yarn. The visitors
to the museum will then get a chance to see something they wouldn't normally
have access to! Visitors will appreciate the fuzzy comforting nature of
the yarn! After the show is over the crocheted object will be placed on
top of the inaccessible site to preserve it for future generations!
Summary: I will crochet
a replica of a hidden space that will then be put on display during the
show. After the show it will be placed on top of the space it replicated.
Inspiration:
Recently I visited an old bath house in Hot Springs Arkansas. The bath
house had been converted into a museum. there were many rooms arranged
and displayed to look like they did when the bath house was at its peak.
But there were also many locked doors. I found myself trying the doorknobs
of many of these doors in hopes of discovering something new inside. I
found out where they keep their extra informational pamphlets, but not
much else. I am interested in the curiosity these locked spaces generate,
the desire to know the whole space, not just the sections designated as
visitor safe.
Frozen in time: Images
of a Bath house in Hot Springs Arkansas
These images show various rooms in the bath house preserved with authentic
fixtures from the bath house. The portions of the room containing the
furniture and other original decor and props were either behind a glass
wall or fence.
Images of a past work
that approximate what I think the final Crochetovision project will look
like:
